Senior Software Engineer - Backend

Description

The company works on enterprise spend data, which records how a business really operates. That data is spread across many systems and older technology, and the company is building a platform that turns it into a consistent, trusted base that anyone in a business can query in plain language using AI.

The company is well funded and growing fast, and has processed more than £1 trillion of spend for some of the world's largest companies. Partners use it to run major transformations much faster.

This is a senior backend role in a small, high-trust team in London, near London Bridge. You will have real autonomy over how you work and real influence over architecture, product and how engineering grows. As an early team member, you will help shape the culture, processes and direction.

Hiring process: intro call, background interview, technical interview, final interview, then offer, referencing and start.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and ship high-quality backend systems that power the platform.
• Talk with customers to understand their problems, and bring new insights and ideas that shape the product.
• Build reliable, scalable data and AI pipelines that ingest and process enterprise data.
• Create internal tools and models that extract more value from enterprise data and improve how the product is delivered.
• Widen the range and depth of data the platform can access, so customers get a fuller picture of how large businesses run.
• Push the limits of applied AI, both in the product and in how the team builds it.
• Own problems from definition through to deployment, making sound decisions on architecture, trade-offs, performance and reliability.
• Find faster, more valuable ways to deliver results to customers at scale.
• Connect new kinds of enterprise data beyond spend, so the platform can reach and link them.
• Leave pipelines and tools that are reliable, documented and used by the team without needing you.

Requirements

• You are a senior backend engineer who likes hard, loosely defined problems and carries them all the way to production. Experience in enterprise data or procurement is not required. The company cares about how you think and the quality of your work.
• Strong backend fundamentals and experience building reliable, maintainable systems, ideally with complex or messy data.
• Sound architectural judgement, with the ability to explain the trade-offs behind your decisions.
• A track record of taking problems from investigation to production.
• A solid grasp of software design principles. Experience with.NET and TypeScript is helpful, but fundamentals count for more than a matching stack.
• High standards for testing, code quality and managing technical debt.
• Clear communication with engineers, product staff, customers and external technical teams.
• Genuine curiosity about applied AI, and the creativity to apply it to problems others have not solved.
• Previous startup experience is not essential, though the pace, initiative and judgement to work well in one are.
• You will likely fit well here if you value ownership, care for the people you work with, a bias towards action, craft, building systems others can reuse, candour, and curiosity about AI.
