Description

Senior Data Engineer role in the Indirect Tax & Customs area of a high-volume global e-commerce business.

Tax outcomes come from millions of transactions across orders, payments, fulfilment, logistics, customs, returns and finance systems. The aim is to bring that data together.

You will work day to day with Indirect Tax & Customs specialists and with Data, Technology, Finance and Supply Chain colleagues to build scalable data products, automated controls and analytics.

This is not a conventional tax role. Prior VAT or customs expertise is not needed.

The company is looking for a capable data engineer who is interested in complex business processes and wants to use technology to change how that work gets done.

The Tax team handles the group's global tax and customs affairs, covering indirect tax, customs compliance, direct tax, transfer pricing, tax governance, risk management and tax transformation. It works closely with Finance, Technology, Supply Chain, Logistics and external advisors.

Responsibilities

  • Build a dependable data foundation that links the full transaction lifecycle, from order and payment through fulfilment, shipment, customs, tax, returns, accounting and compliance.
  • Design and build scalable pipelines across complex transactional systems.
  • Create reusable data models for tax, customs, finance and supply chain use.
  • Replace reconciliations that currently depend on manual data handling with automated ones.
  • Build controls that review complete transaction populations and flag exceptions.
  • Join ERP, e-commerce, logistics, customs and tax datasets.
  • Build analytics and dashboards that surface risk and financial opportunities.
  • Improve data quality, lineage and auditability.
  • Investigate how automation, machine learning and AI can address tax and customs problems.
  • Problems you may work on include checking that every customs declaration matches the correct shipment and transaction, confirming all transactions reach the right VAT reporting process, finding import VAT that has not been recovered, spotting unusual tax outcomes before they become compliance issues, and using data to find customs duty savings or recovery opportunities.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on data engineering experience, including expert T-SQL with performance tuning on Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Building ETL and ELT pipelines with Databricks, Azure Data Factory or Fabric.
  • Data warehousing, dimensional modelling and dimensional data mart design.
  • Building analytics and dashboards in Power BI.
  • Working with APIs and integrations.
  • Handling large transactional datasets.
  • Using Alteryx or a similar analytics automation tool to build governed, repeatable workflows for ingestion, transformation, validation, reconciliation and exception reporting.
  • Data quality practices and automated testing.
  • Modern development and version control with GitHub and Azure DevOps.
  • Experience with Dynamics 365 for Finance & Operations (D365F&O) is highly desirable.
  • No tax background is required. VAT, customs or tax technology experience would help but is not essential.
  • The company values your ability to make sense of complex problems, connect and query data across several systems, and build scalable solutions.

Conditions

Data-led work: you receive problems to solve rather than report requests, and you help decide what gets built, how it works and how success is measured.

The aim is to move from manual extract, spreadsheet, reconcile and fix cycles to connected data, automated controls, exceptions, insight and prevention.

In your first year, you would help build a trusted Indirect Tax & Customs data foundation, automate key reconciliations, introduce continuous exception-based controls, reduce spreadsheet-driven work, find tax and customs leakage, improve visibility of tax risk and develop new automation and AI use cases.

Benefits

  • Work on the groundwork for the next generation of tax technology, including automation, advanced analytics and AI.
