Description

The company is the company's Data & AI Science team, the group that develops, tests, validates and turns emerging AI methods into products and platforms used across the bank. The team also keeps learning systems and agents reliable at scale over time, and turns frontier AI research into decision systems the bank relies on.

This is a senior individual contributor role in Madrid, Spain, that moves traditional data science toward AI Science, using modern learning systems and agentic architectures to change how models are designed, evaluated and run in production.

You will work hands-on in project squads, but the role also includes guiding project direction and mentoring peers, with method choices backed by evidence and aligned with risk and governance requirements.

The aim is scientific rigour, measurable impact and long-term system behaviour rather than delivering one model at a time.

Responsibilities

  • Frame business problems as scientific questions, design experiments, and build advanced models that go beyond standard machine learning pipelines.
  • Apply modern AI methods such as graph-based learning, reinforcement learning, synthetic data generation, advanced retrieval and Generative AI where they fit the problem.
  • Work with engineering, product and business stakeholders to take models from prototype to reliable systems that adapt over time.
  • Contribute directly to data preparation, model design, experimentation, validation and deployment.
  • Mentor peers and guide methodological choices within project squads.

Requirements

  • 7 to 12 years of experience in data science, machine learning or applied AI, with proven impact in production.
  • Strong grounding in statistics, experimental design and model evaluation, including turning business questions into testable hypotheses.
  • Practical experience with modern AI techniques such as graph-based models, reinforcement learning, synthetic data generation, representation learning or advanced retrieval systems.
  • A track record of moving from exploratory analysis to scalable AI systems that run reliably over time.
  • Experience contributing within cross-functional teams while owning technical components and project outcomes.
  • Strong programming skills, for example in Python and modern ML frameworks, and familiarity with distributed data or ML environments.
  • Ability to lead project execution as a senior individual contributor, combining hands-on development with methodological guidance.
  • Curiosity about emerging AI tools, with a disciplined approach to testing whether they work in practice.
  • English at fluent or high level.
  • Spanish is preferred but not required.

Conditions

Hybrid working, with some days remote and some days onsite with your team, plus flexible hours.

Equal opportunities regardless of age, gender, disability, civil status, race, religion or sexual orientation. Reasonable accommodations are available during the application process.

Benefits

  • A fair, competitive reward package reflecting the value you deliver, including a highly competitive salary and performance-based bonuses.
  • Preferential banking terms, special loan interest rates, life insurance and more.
  • Access to hundreds of courses, including the global learning space the company Open Academy.
  • Global opportunities and broad career paths.
  • BeHealthy wellness programme, childcare support and family-friendly programmes.
  • The company Contigo, offering legal, emotional and administrative advice for employees and their families.
  • Gym or WellHub membership, medical centres at some sites, meal subsidy, parking, shuttle service from various points in Madrid, and employee discounts.
