The role sits in system engineering, which combines platform engineering with business management and operational ownership of complex systems and technology platforms across their life cycles. The engineer may take a holistic view or specialise in databases, servers, virtualisation or networking.
The team works in wealth management and builds the infrastructure behind it.
Responsibilities
Design, build and document enterprise x86 virtualised infrastructure, focused on agile, automated and secure cloud environments based on software-defined networking (SDN).
Set the direction for network architecture using micro-segmentation, logical switching and routing, distributed firewalls and intent-based policies to control access and isolate workloads.
Run virtualisation and network services end to end, covering high availability, performance tuning, fault fixes and incident handling, and answer for uptime and response times (L2/L3 support).
Lead the global rollout, monitoring and ongoing optimisation of virtualised infrastructure, using stateful service chaining, overlay networks and a central control plane for scalable, resilient connectivity.
Plan and carry out large transformations such as data centre migrations, technology refreshes and lifecycle upgrades of network virtualisation components, including tier-0/tier-1 gateways, edge clusters and distributed routing engines.
Drive automation and GitOps, promoting API-first configuration, declarative policies and Infrastructure as Code so that deployments are consistent, auditable and span hybrid environments.
Write and put in place operating procedures for policy-driven networks that keep the environment compliant, recoverable and transparent.
Manage capacity and performance for compute and network workloads proactively, using real-time telemetry, flow analytics and visibility fabrics to spot bottlenecks, forecast growth and prevent degradation.
Serve as the technical escalation point for critical issues affecting virtual infrastructure and network services during on-call shifts.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a closely related technical field. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.
At least 5 years of hands-on work as a senior virtualisation engineer designing, delivering and running enterprise x86 infrastructure in mission-critical environments.
Proven skills with VMware vSphere, including ESXi, vCenter Server and lifecycle management of virtual platforms.
Solid understanding of SDN, including logical switching and routing, overlay networks (VXLAN/Geneve), distributed firewalling and central policy enforcement.
Strong grounding in data centre networking: IPv4/IPv6, BGP, Tier-0/Tier-1 service gateways, transport node setup and integration between logical and physical networks.
Direct experience with VMware NSX-T is highly advantageous, especially for micro-segmentation, distributed security policies, Edge services and API automation.
Familiarity with VMware AVI (NSX Advanced Load Balancer) is a distinct plus, especially for application delivery, intelligent traffic steering, L7 load balancing, WAF integration and Kubernetes ingress control.
Experience deploying and managing SDDC frameworks is preferably with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), where NSX underpins network virtualisation and security.
Hands-on automation with PowerShell, Python and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible, including API work against NSX Manager and AVI Controller.
Working knowledge of storage architectures: SAN/NAS, Fibre Channel and file protocols (NFS/CIFS).
Exposure to container platforms such as Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG/IE) or VKS, especially connecting Kubernetes clusters to SDN-based networking and security policies.
Willingness to join the 7x24 on-call rotation, providing escalation support and leading the fix for critical infrastructure incidents.
Self-motivated and detail-oriented, able to own complex technical work with limited supervision.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work well in an agile, international team.
Fluent written and spoken English is required. Additional languages are beneficial given the regional presence.
Conditions
This is a 100% position.
The on-call rotation is 7x24 and covers about one week per month.
