Description

The R&D manufacturing systems research team at the company is hiring a researcher to build and apply AI and machine learning methods to advanced manufacturing systems.

The work targets practical problems in process improvement, quality, automation, production efficiency and decision support. You will shape new ideas with a multidisciplinary group, build prototypes, test them and help move proven solutions into production use.

Responsibilities

  • You will carry out applied research and development where AI/ML meets manufacturing, working with researchers, manufacturing engineers, plant staff, operations teams and outside partners to find opportunities and build workable solutions.
  • Develop and assess AI/ML models for manufacturing engineering and production.
  • Build data pipelines, prototypes, analysis tools and decision-support systems.
  • Apply machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, large language models, computer vision, time-series modeling and optimization.
  • Work with data from sensors, equipment, processes, simulations and operational systems.
  • Turn engineering and manufacturing problems into research questions and technical plans.
  • Design experiments, check results and judge technical and business impact.
  • Assess new AI/ML technologies for their value to the company's manufacturing systems.
  • Work alongside cross-functional teams, universities, suppliers and technical experts.
  • Report findings through presentations, reports, publications and invention disclosures.
  • Keep up with AI/ML methods, tools and responsible AI practices.

Requirements

  • Required: hold a master's or PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a closely related field.
  • Required: have built and evaluated AI/ML models through academic research, industrial research, internships or applied engineering work.
  • Required: be proficient in Python and have used AI/ML frameworks or analytical tools.
  • Required: know data preparation, model training, validation, performance evaluation and experiment design.
  • Required: have worked with structured or unstructured data such as sensor, time-series, image, text or process data.
  • Required: bring strong analytical, problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Required: be able to work independently and contribute to a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Preferred: prior AI/ML work in manufacturing, robotics, automation, scientific computing or industrial operations.
  • Preferred: knowledge of manufacturing process modeling, process control, quality systems, production systems, optimization or operations research.
  • Preferred: experience with computer vision, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, digital twins, simulation, reinforcement learning, generative AI, large language models or agentic systems.
  • Preferred: experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Keras, MATLAB, R, SQL or cloud-based AI/ML platforms.
  • Preferred: experience designing data architectures, integrating databases or deploying models into operational environments.
  • Preferred: familiarity with MLOps, model monitoring, model lifecycle management and responsible AI.
  • Preferred: peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, patents or invention disclosures.
  • Preferred: experience working with universities, suppliers, research institutions or geographically spread technical teams.
