Description

This graduate role in Birmingham starts in 2027 and sits within the Highways and Complete Streets Engineering teams across the UK and Ireland.

The team is one of the largest dedicated engineering groups in the UK and Ireland. It designs and appraises practical transport solutions for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, including road and street layouts, traffic signals, cycle facilities, traffic management and traffic modelling, with the aim of safer, more efficient and more sustainable networks.

You will work in multidisciplinary teams next to experienced engineers and other technical staff to deliver cost-effective solutions for clients.

Projects cover everything from concept, feasibility and preliminary design to detailed design and delivery, so you can see the whole lifecycle. The work is quick-moving and collaborative and calls for creativity, technical skill, clear communication and a readiness to learn.

The company is an infrastructure consultancy offering services from advisory and planning through design, engineering, programme and construction management. It works across transport, buildings, water, new energy and the environment, employs over 50,000 people worldwide, and is a Fortune 500 firm with Professional Services revenue of $16.1 billion in fiscal year 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Experienced engineers will guide and mentor you as you build your technical knowledge and professional skills.
  • You will work on live projects and take part in structured training that builds a solid base in traffic engineering and design.
  • Early on, you will help develop designs and technical solutions across project stages, attend site visits, meetings and workshops, and work with clients and other design professionals.
  • You will be trained on engineering design software, which may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Key Signs & Line and Causeway Flow, depending on the project. You will also learn digital engineering and BIM processes.
  • As your confidence grows, you will take on more responsibility for project tasks and technical deliverables, from inception through to completion.
  • You may work on a range of projects, such as road and street design, junction and intersection design, cycle lane and active travel design, bus priority and Bus Rapid Transit schemes, streetscape and urban improvement, traffic management planning, signage and road markings, highway drainage, feasibility studies and scheme development, and road safety assessments and audits.
  • Graduates may also get the chance to work on major highways projects and collaborate across Highways and Complete Streets disciplines, building a wide understanding of transport and infrastructure design.

Requirements

  • A BEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering with a 2:1 or above, or an equivalent qualification.
  • An MEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering with a 2:1 or above is advantageous.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Good technical and report-writing skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to work well with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your work while contributing to the wider team.
  • The ability to work both collaboratively and independently, showing initiative, focus and a willingness to learn.
  • An enthusiastic, technically minded and motivated approach, with ambition and drive.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Your application must include a covering letter and all predicted or achieved academic grades.
  • You must hold the permanent right to work in the UK, as visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
