Description

The role is Principal Engineer, providing technical leadership for systems security engineering to protect the company products against a growing range of complex threats.

You will own defined security engineering work packages, planning and coordinating them across medium-term delivery horizons with attention to their effect on the wider programme.

You will work in a multidisciplinary team to shape security requirements, architectures and assurance evidence, solve hard technical problems, and advise engineering teams, customers and other stakeholders. You will also review technical outputs, support engineering decisions and grow other engineers through mentoring, coaching and knowledge sharing.

The role sits in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) team. GCAP will deliver Tempest, a sixth-generation combat aircraft to replace the Royal Air Force's Typhoon fleet from 2035.

The team is looking for an experienced Principal Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Own defined systems security engineering work packages, setting scope, activities, dependencies, milestones and deliverables.
  • Work with systems engineering teams to identify the technologies and processes needed to meet customer requirements.
  • Lead the creation of security architectures, security baselines and proportionate risk mitigation strategies that align with system requirements and programme goals.
  • Define how security controls must behave in radar and electro-optical infrared (EOIR) systems and subsystems.
  • Write and maintain documentation covering functional requirements, design, implementation, integration, verification and qualification.
  • Support engineering lifecycle reviews and design assurance processes.
  • Produce compliance assessments and evidence against key security functions, controls and designs.
  • Plan and coordinate your own work and, where needed, others' work, tracking progress against agreed schedule, cost and quality targets.
  • Give technical support to the Product Cyber Reliance management specialist.
  • Develop and update product security good practice across several disciplines so products stay secure from initial design to disposal.

Requirements

  • Strong systems engineering background, including physical product development such as embedded systems, electronics and hardware-software integration.
  • Experience with requirements and model-based systems engineering tools such as DOORS and Cameo.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to pick up new concepts quickly.
  • Ability to explain security concepts, risks and decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, and to influence engineering teams, customers and suppliers.
  • Ability to break down and allocate system-level security requirements to subsystems, and to work with multidisciplinary teams to select and implement secure hardware and software.
  • Desirable: understanding of Secure by Design principles and how they apply across the product lifecycle.
  • Desirable: familiarity with security and information assurance frameworks, including ISO27001, ISO27004, ISO27005 and the NIST Risk Management Framework.
  • Desirable: ability to keep up with current security trends and events.
  • Security clearance: the role is subject to pre-employment screening under the UK Government's Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Additional National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, which could include eligibility for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV). Details are available on the company careers site.
