Description

The team builds and changes technology for a large financial company, and the work centers on solving complex business problems in a collaborative, iterative setting.

The role sits at the front of a major transformation effort across the company, and the people involved build, test, and fix real products that meet real customer needs.

The company works with open source frameworks and newer technologies, and the work is fast-paced.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a team of developers who have deep experience with distributed microservices and full-stack systems, building solutions that address the company's regulatory needs.
• Stay current on technology trends, try and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technology communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver sturdy cloud-based solutions that give millions of Americans better tools for financial empowerment.
• Use languages such as Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, and TypeScript, along with open source relational and NoSQL databases, container orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes, and a range of AWS tools and services.
• Set technical direction across Agile teams, defining standards for design, development, and operational excellence.
• Work with architects to set service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks.
• Spot areas that need improvement, refactor where needed, and help reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by assessing emerging tools and practices, working in an environment where teams build and own what they ship.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics, or engineering.
• At least 4 years of software engineering experience. Internship experience does not count.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C, and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, or cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control systems such as Git, GitHub, or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional development within technical teams.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and improve performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools that go beyond basic code completion to boost productivity.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Full-time annual salary ranges by location: McLean, VA $197,300 to $225,100; Plano, TX $179,400 to $204,700; Richmond, VA $179,400 to $204,700. Candidates hired in other locations get the range for their location, and the exact offered salary appears in the offer letter. Part-time pay is prorated to agreed hours.

The role is eligible for performance-based incentive pay, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI). Incentives may be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
