Description

The team is globally diverse and builds or selects top tools that deliver core observability services across the company.

It works with a DevOps mindset, creating new tools and interfaces and running one of the largest logging deployments in the industry alongside other observability tools.

The team is tight-knit and focused on a robust platform and on supporting both internal engineering groups and one another.

The company needs an experienced engineering manager to lead the team, develop its people, and move the observability strategy forward.

This role suits someone who enjoys building high-performing teams and working on hard problems where results trace clearly back to the team's work.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction and make strategic decisions for the team, shaping its plans.
  • Lead hiring, growth and retention, including performance management, career development and headcount planning.
  • Partner with SRE and engineering and product leaders to run key initiatives and align roadmaps.
  • Take ownership of uptime and quality of service for the company's customers through operational excellence.
  • Set up and manage on-call coverage across a multi-tool observability stack so issues can be triaged and resolved on every platform.
  • Coordinate the resolution of performance and stability problems using a range of tools.

Requirements

  • 10+ years building distributed applications at scale on public and/or private cloud, including 3+ years managing engineering teams.
  • Experience leading teams that design and build large-scale observability platforms.
  • B.S. in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Proven record of hiring, developing, mentoring and retaining engineers on a diverse, distributed team.
  • Track record leading teams that run self-hosted logging systems such as Splunk, ClickHouse, Loki or Elastic, supporting clients and improving performance and stability.
  • Show you have reduced ingestion costs across a team using data analysis, pipeline guardrails and direct work with customer engineers to remove unnecessary log volume.
  • Solid grasp of OpenTelemetry, including collector configuration, pipelines and instrumentation, and the ability to guide a team carrying out the company's OpenTelemetry-native observability strategy.
  • Experience setting technical direction for AI agent development and bringing AI workflows into large-scale deployments, with the ability to lead teams building AI-assisted workflows that surface insights from large log datasets and automate routine user interactions.
  • Experience overseeing distributed environments serving thousands of users.
  • Enough knowledge of Go and Python to provide technical leadership, review architecture, and guide engineers building integrations and applications for large-scale observability environments.
  • Experience guiding the design and implementation of systems for fault tolerance, scalability and stability.
  • Experience leading teams that develop, deploy and run distributed applications on cloud platforms, including container and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience defining service level objectives and service level indicators to measure service quality.
  • Knowledge of public and/or private cloud deployments.
  • Experience overseeing the design and maintenance of production monitoring systems.
  • Excellent communicator who drives projects and people to successful outcomes within and across teams.
  • Good to have: experience guiding teams that evaluate and prototype alternative storage or processing backends, such as ClickHouse or Loki, as part of a longer-term platform cost reduction and scalability strategy.
  • Good to have: experience with other observability tools such as Grafana, Cortex and Tempo.
  • Good to have: familiarity with a range of cloud security and automation concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Good to have: ability to champion the DevOps and SRE approach across the organization.
  • Good to have: experience managing budgets, vendor relationships and stakeholder communication across the organization.
