Description

The company makes safety and risk intelligence software for the maritime industry, with the aim of a Zero Harm industry. It combines trusted standards, AI-native technology, maritime data and industry expertise to turn complex safety and operational risk into information customers can act on.

More than 1,000 organisations worldwide use the platform to improve safety, resilience and compliance across global shipping, and the company is moving toward a scalable intelligence platform.

The AI capability in the Product team is growing, and the company is hiring an AI Engineer in London to build applied, experimental AI solutions with Product Managers.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Product Managers to gather and refine requirements and turn them into candidate AI solutions with clear success criteria and evaluation plans.
  • Prototype LLM applications, agents and retrieval pipelines quickly to find out whether an idea works before it goes on the roadmap.
  • Build and run offline and online evaluation suites that define quality for each feature and monitor it in production over time.
  • Produce production-ready code with tests, evals, documentation and observability, then hand it to engineering and support them through productionisation.
  • Build and maintain retrieval and embedding pipelines over maritime data, including inspection reports, vessel records, documents and the knowledge graph.
  • Propose and document solution architectures, covering model choice, orchestration, data access, guardrails, and cost and latency trade-offs.
  • Apply Responsible AI practice, including traceability, guardrails, failure mode and bias assessment, in line with the company's AI risk management framework.
  • Present experimental results and recommendations clearly to product, engineering and senior stakeholders.
  • Contribute to shared AI tooling, patterns and standards, review code and share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Track new models, agent frameworks and evaluation methods and decide which are worth adopting.

Requirements

  • Essential: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Essential: At least 3+ years of hands-on experience in AI/ML or software engineering, including LLM-based applications that have run in production.
  • Essential: Strong Python and solid software engineering basics, including testing, packaging, version control, code review and CI.
  • Essential: Proven experience building agentic systems and RAG pipelines with LangGraph and LangChain or similar, covering tool use, state management and structured outputs.
  • Essential: Comfort working in an experimental setting with loosely defined requirements, where part of the job is deciding what to build.
  • Essential: Excellent communication, including explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.
  • Desirable: Experience designing and running LLM evaluations, including evaluation datasets, metric selection, LLM-as-judge, regression testing and production quality monitoring.
  • Desirable: Working knowledge of embeddings, vector search and hybrid retrieval.
  • Desirable: Experience deploying AI workloads on Azure, such as Azure OpenAI, AI Foundry, Azure AI Search, Functions or Container Apps.
  • Desirable: Experience with Databricks, including MLflow, Delta Lake and model serving.
  • Desirable: Solid ML fundamentals; PyTorch or classical ML exposure is useful but not central to the role.
  • Desirable: Experience with multi-modal models, particularly document and image understanding.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with graph databases such as Neo4j and Cypher, or with knowledge graphs.
  • Desirable: Experience in maritime, shipping, logistics or another safety- or compliance-driven domain.
  • Desirable: Open-source contributions or a public portfolio of work.

Conditions

The role is based in London and sits inside the Product team rather than a central engineering function.

Most of the work covers LLM applications, agentic systems and retrieval over structured and unstructured maritime data, mainly on Azure and Databricks.

You must have the right to live and work in London to apply.

The company is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity and inclusion.

Benefits

  • A competitive base salary.
  • An annual incentive scheme.
  • A Healthy Living Allowance and support for employee wellbeing.
  • Access to colleagues who are glad to share their experience and skills.
  • A commitment to professional development as your career grows.
