Sign Up to ReadThe idea of credit predates coinage itself. In ancient Babylon, loans of grain and silver were recorded on clay tablets, complete with interest rates, repayment terms, collateral, and the names of witnesses. These early systems turned trust into something durable and transferable, allowing people to invest in crops, businesses, and trade before they had the resources in hand. Nearly four thousand years later, credit still serves the same fundamental purpose: giving people and businesses the ability to act today based on what they can repay tomorrow. Now, people aren’t using silver—they are using Mercury.
Modern credit cards make that promise feel instantaneous, but the systems behind them are anything but simple. Every transaction sits at the intersection of real-time authorization, credit risk, account servicing, repayment, interest, rewards, disputes, and regulation. Customers expect credit to work everywhere, immediately, while trusting that their account balance is accurate, their payments are applied correctly, and their business has access to capital when it matters most.
At Mercury, credit cards are an essential part of how ambitious companies manage spending and access capital. The Credit Card team builds and operates the credit-specific systems behind that experience—from credit account creation and lifecycle management to balances, statements, payments, interest, delinquency, and the controls that keep the product safe and compliant. As Mercury expands its credit offerings and pursues a bank charter, this team will help define what a modern, bank-grade credit platform should look like.
We’re looking for a seasoned engineering leader to guide the Credit Card team through its next stage of growth. This person will lead the engineers building the foundation of Mercury’s credit card platform, develop deep expertise across a complex financial domain, and partner closely with Product, Risk, Compliance, Operations, and Finance. They will be responsible not only for delivering excellent credit products today, but also for building the systems and team that will allow Mercury’s credit capabilities to evolve for years to come.
As part of this role, you will:
Lead a team of 7+ backend and full-stack engineers
Hire, mentor, and retain high-performing engineers across experience levels
Help shape the organization structure as the payment rails group scales
Coach emerging leaders inside of the group
Drive predictable execution against company and product goals
Foster a healthy, engaging, and high-performing team environment
Uphold a high bar for technical quality, reliability, and system stability
Align engineering work with Mercury’s values and long-term strategy
Partner closely with product and design to identify and prioritize high-impact work
Collaborate across teams to build cohesive products and simpler, more maintainable systems
Balance new development with ongoing maintenance and operational excellence
The ideal candidate for the role:
Has 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams at multiple organizations (experience leading remote-first, distributed teams is a plus)
Has been hired as an external manager previously and knows how to gain domain knowledge to have positive impact quickly
Experience operating in high-responsibility/high-impact domains
Comfortable with ambiguity and growing scope
Track record of leading through cross-functional and cross-team coordination
Brings strong technical judgment and credibility: you’ll interview at a similar technical depth as senior ICs
Is familiar with our tech stack (especially Haskell), or excited to learn it
Has experience in finance, fintech, or banking systems (credit card experience is a plus)
