Description

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

Service Infrastructure enables Stripe’s engineers to build and ship products using efficient, reliable, service oriented architectures. This organization sits at the boundary between Infrastructure and Product where they engineer Stripe’s service frameworks, standard user-facing API semantics, async orchestration platforms, developer tooling, and mission critical product infrastructure (e.g. webhook fulfillment). Key priorities for this group include delivering an amazing internal developer experience, enabling Stripes to effectively leverage Infrastructure platforms, and driving systemic improvements to Stripe’s API availability.

Responsibilities

  • As an Engineering Manager of Managers within the Service Infrastructure organization, you will lead multiple teams, collaborate with infrastructure and product engineering leaders, and advance Stripe’s architecture. You will operate some of the company’s most critical services and you will collaborate with Stripe’s product engineering teams to develop frameworks and abstractions that accelerate the company’s most important product launches.
  • Collaborate with high-visibility teams and their stakeholders to support key engineering initiatives.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership (architecture/design, vision/direction/requirements setting, and incident response processes) for your reports.
  • Understand user needs and pain points to prioritize the right engineering work at the right time to enable product engineers to ship new features quickly and reliably.
  • Work with leaders across the company to drive improvements to Stripe’s architecture.
  • Lead and manage processes to help infra teams do their best work and interface effectively with the rest of Stripe.
  • Manage and grow a team of engineers and engineering leaders, including line managers, to deliver high business impact projects on schedule with high-quality.
  • Partners with our recruiting team to attract and hire top talent, and define the overall hiring strategies for your team.

Requirements

  • We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum requirements
  • 2+ years of experience being a manager of managers (leading managers and senior ICs) of teams of at least 25 people.
  • 3+ years of experience managing teams that ship and operate critical distributed system infrastructure.
  • Led staff or principal engineers with a track record of driving alignment between highly technical collaborators on architectural or strategic decisions.
  • Managed effective incident response processes and on-call rotations.
  • Managed engineering teams working on API design, abstractions, frameworks, or client libraries (e.g. building internal or external developer products).
  • Effectively managed demanding/conflicting stakeholder and partner relationships.
  • Experience driving business and product success in a highly cross-functional organization with a high level of autonomy and responsibility.
  • Successfully built a team, defined its mission, and executed on its goals. Experience recruiting, mentoring, and retaining great people that fulfill this mission.
  • Worked effectively cross-functionally and are able to think rigorously, communicate effectively, and make or coordinate hard decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Experience leading partially remote teams and colocated teams in distant geos.
  • Encourages a healthy work environment that’s both challenging and supportive.
  • Preferred qualifications
  • 8+ years of management experience, including 5+ years of being a manager of managers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for different audiences (leadership, users, company-wide).
  • Experience changing culture across large organizations.
  • Experience with a variety of common infrastructure platforms (databases, logging, event streams, metrics, caching, etc).
  • Experience building products using static (Java) and dynamically (Ruby) typed programming languages.
  • Experience developing with and contributing to open source framework ecosystems.
  • Experience developing sustainable, in-house framework and abstraction ecosystems in large engineering organizations.
  • Experience building with cloud primitives from AWS or other cloud providers
